Belleair Florida is located on the west coast of Florida close to Clearwater and some of the best beaches in Florida. It has a rich and diverse history and now is a great residential community of about 4,100 people.

Early on, Belleair was little more than an agricultural sister to Clearwater. But Belleair really hit the map when, in the 1890’s, the Belleview Hotel was opened by Henry B. Plant, a railroad magnate. The hotel included a railroad siding for private railroad cars owned by wealthy winter patrons. It was constructed on a peninsula west of Tampa Bay (in present day Pinellas County), and had top of the line amenities for the day, including yachting on Clearwater Bay, horseback riding in the piney woods south of the hotel; golfing, tennis, skeet shooting and bicycling. By World War I, the 9 hole golf course had become an 18 hole golf course, and in 1920 John McEntee Bowman, owner of the Biltmore hotel chain, purchased the property. It was renamed the Belleview Biltmore Hotel.

The snowbirds of the time started to realize that the area would be a great place to live year round and started constructing residences. In 1925 the Town of Belleair was incorporated and a town planner, John Nolen, was hired to lay out the streets that still exist today. After the stock market crash in 1929 caused a future 1930’s default by the town on improvement bonds, much of the town was abandoned.

During World War II, the historic Belleview Biltmore was used to house servicemen from MacDill Air Force base in Tampa.

After World War II, most of the land south of the Biltmore was purchased by the late E.W. Hallett. The area was cleaned up. In 1944 Georgine Shillard-Smith donated seven acres to create an arts center. In the 1950’s new construction started and the town was again growing, as it did again in the 1960’s. In the 1970’s U.S. Steel purchased the land in front of the Biltmore and the Island to it’s west where condos were constructed. At this time, the residents also set aside land for parks and paths.

Today, the town consists of residences, including single family, multi family and condominiums, three 18 hole golf courses and some commercial and business use buildings, including the original historic Biltmore Hotel. The charming downtown area includes “Antiques Row”, restaurants and boutiques. Our favorite condos are nestled along the intracoastal waterways in the gated Belleair Country Club complex and also along the Belleair Causeway on Harbor View.

Codified rules keep the community the wonderful place to live that it is (for example, we have to have to have REALLY short real estate signs in Belleair to follow town rules!) The Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club is located at in Palm Harbor at 36750 US Hwy 19 North between Klosterman and Alderman Roads, and was purchased by Sheila Johnson and her company Salamander Hospitality in 2007 for $35M.  Since then, more than $25 Million in renovations have been completed or are underway.  This always wonderful resort was growing just a little tired, and in just a short time is now on the verge of a complete transformation into something spectacular.

INNISBROOK GOLF

Innisbrook has four championship courses with plenty of hilly terrain (a rarity in these flatlands!).  The Copperhead course hosts the PGA tour each March.  A $2 Million renovation was completed on the Islands course in 2008, and is believed by some to be tougher than Copperhead.  Golf Digest reports it as “One of America’s Top 50 Courses”.   Both courses have their own clubhouse, and the Highlands North and South courses share a clubhouse, each with a putting green.  There are three driving ranges, three golf shops and a service staff with a can-do attitude.

THE INNISBROOK SPA

‘Full Family Including Golf’ memberships start at $40,000 and there are various discounts if you own a condo on site.  If that price tag made you queasy, keep reading …. there are affordable ways to enjoy Innisbrook.  Golf only memberships start at $7,500 for the initiation fee with monthly dues of $199.  Tennis memberships have an annual fee of only $129 with monthly dues of $129.

There are also social memberships for only $99 per month which provides membership to the clubhouses, restaurants, swimming poos, golf practice range, fitness center and dining and room discounts.  Many area parents sign up for the Innisbrook Lock Ness Monster pool benefits alone!

TUSCANY AT INNISBROOK CONDOS

The Tuscany at Innisbrook condos were a conversion that was completed in 2005 when they were the talk of the town given the luxury for the price.  This gated Palm Harbor community features Mediterreanean arctitecture with resort-like surroundings.   There are two heated pools with sundecks, heated spa with waterfall, state of the art fitness center, a basketball court and a playgrounds.   It’s also one of the harder to find pet-friendly Palm Harbor condo communities.  The interiors feature 9-foot ceilings and nice finishes.

Tuscany at Innisbrook condos are between 756sf and 1741sf and are anywhere from 1 to 4 bedrooms, with parking in common or up to two car garages.  Prices currently are unbelievably affordable and between $80,000 and the low $200′s.

Our fabulous beach was recently voted the #1 Beach in the United States!   To get an idea of what a day at Caladesi Island beach is like, see Visit Florida or Caladesi Beach.

This white-sand beach is secluded and on many days you’ll be able to watch dolphin splashing about just off the shore.  

If you’re a sea shell collector, go early in the morning and prepare to be blown away. 

You can have a simple lunch at the Caladesi Cafe where you can grab a hot dog or an ice cream (the food’s nothing to get excited about – bring a bag lunch if you can).  Beach chairs and umbrellas are also available, and on most days, our friend Bonnie will be there to help set up your chairs.  Bonnie even supplies sand buckets and shovels for the kids if you forget yours. 

I don’t know about you, but it’s the first day of summer and the lightening and thunder outside right now are amazing – but we’re ready to stop by Steve’s Produce stand in Palm Harbor and pick up a peach.  And head for the beach.
